Learning came alive at Brooklyn Avenue School in the Valley Stream 24 School District as students participated in a meaningful exploration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during recent library classes. Through a combination of multimedia presentations, reading, and hands-on activities, students across grade levels deepened their understanding of Dr. King’s enduring message of equality, leadership, and service.

During the lessons, students viewed an age-appropriate video and participated in guided reading activities that highlighted Dr. King’s impact on history and civil rights. They then expressed their learning through creative projects tailored to their grade levels. Kindergarten students used STEAM materials to construct models of Dr. King’s podium, symbolizing his powerful voice and leadership role. Third-grade students created word collages capturing key traits of Dr. King’s character, reflecting on his lasting message of justice and equality.

Valley Stream 24 Hosts Inspiring Assembly with Motivational Speaker Rohan Murphy

The Valley Stream 24 School District recently welcomed nationally recognized American Paralympian, wrestler and motivational speaker Rohan Murphy for a powerful and inspiring visit with sixth-grade students across all three district schools. Murphy’s visit left a lasting impression on students and reinforced the district’s commitment to fostering resilience, confidence, and positive social-emotional development.

During his presentation, Murphy shared his remarkable personal journey of perseverance, resilience, and self-belief, encouraging students to view challenges as opportunities for growth. He connected with students in an authentic and engaging way through candid storytelling, humor, and meaningful dialogue, motivating them to believe in themselves and their potential both inside and outside the classroom.

Despite losing his legs at a young age, Murphy defied the odds by building a successful athletic career, ultimately competing as a wrestler at Penn State University. His inspiring story has been featured by major media outlets including ABC News, Sports Illustrated, 20/20, and Nike’s influential “No Excuses” campaign.

Robert W. Carbonaro School PTA Hosts Exciting Student Bake-Off

The Parent Teacher Association at Robert W. Carbonaro School in the Valley Stream 24 School District recently hosted an exciting and delicious bake-off competition.

Students showcased their baking skills by presenting three cakes, which were judged by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Unal Karakas, Principal Rosario Iacono, and Teacher Margaret Otton. The judges sampled each entry and selected a winning cake after thoughtful consideration.

“This event was a wonderful reflection of our community coming together,” said Superintendent Dr. Unal Karakas. “Our students are at the heart of everything we do, and it was inspiring to see families, staff, community members, and students connected in a way that celebrates creativity, collaboration, and shared purpose.”

The event was further enhanced by the presence of Legislator Cynthia Nuñez, who attended to show her continued support for the school and district community. A former PTA member at Robert W. Carbonaro School and a former member of the Board of Education, Legislator Nuñez commended the district for its recent achievements and the PTA for its ongoing commitment to enriching student experiences.

Valley Stream 24 Superintendent Dr. Karakas and Student Council Discuss the Role of AI in Education

Valley Stream 24 School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Unal Karakas recently met with Student Council members to engage in a thoughtful and meaningful discussion about the growing role of artificial intelligence and its impact on education.

During the conversation, students demonstrated a strong understanding of artificial intelligence and shared insightful perspectives on how it can be used responsibly in the classroom. Student leaders emphasized that AI should be implemented carefully and purposefully, noting its particular value for students in grades four through six.

Students shared that AI can serve as a valuable tool for studying, researching topics, and supporting creative thinking. At the same time, they unanimously stressed that AI should never replace their own thinking or work, underscoring the importance of academic integrity, effort, and authentic learning.

“I was truly impressed by our students’ depth of understanding, not only about artificial intelligence, but also about the safeguards needed to use this emerging technology responsibly,” said Dr. Karakas. “Their perspectives align closely with our district’s core belief that technology should enhance learning while preserving critical thinking, creativity, and student ownership of work.”

Valley Stream 24 Students Shine in School-Level Scripps Spelling Bees

Students from all schools within the Valley Stream 24 School District recently showcased their academic excellence by participating in the school-level Scripps Spelling Bees.

Demonstrating impressive spelling skills and dedication, winners from each school have earned the opportunity to advance to the next level of the national competition. As part of the advancement process, qualifying students will complete an online assessment to determine eligibility for the regional spelling bee.

Preparation for the competition was a collaborative effort, with students working closely alongside their teachers and families to strengthen vocabulary, refine spelling strategies, and build confidence. Beyond testing spelling accuracy, the competition challenged students to understand the meanings, origins, and applications of complex words. The rigorous preparation enriched students’ language skills and reinforced classroom learning in meaningful ways.

Valley Stream 24 Student to Have Her Artwork Featured on the NYSSBA’s Official 2026 Holiday Card

The Valley Stream 24 School District is proud to announce that Cali C., a third-grade student at William L. Buck School, has had her artwork selected by the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) to be featured on the organization’s official 2026 holiday card.

Each year, NYSSBA selects one student artwork from across New York State to serve as the cover of its holiday card, which is distributed to school districts and educational leaders statewide. Cali’s winning piece, Snowman at Night, was chosen from submissions representing districts throughout New York, making this a tremendous honor for Cali, her family, and the Valley Stream 24 School District.

“This is an extraordinary accomplishment and a moment of great pride for our entire district community,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Unal Karakas. “Cali’s creativity and talent, along with the dedication of our teachers, staff, and families, exemplify the exceptional learning experiences we strive to provide for every student.”

Valley Stream 24 Board of Education Hosts a Successful District Walkthrough

The Valley Stream 24 School District Board of Education recently welcomed members of the community and distinguished elected officials for a comprehensive walkthrough of all three district schools, highlighting the exceptional work taking place across the district. The event drew an impressive turnout and created meaningful opportunities for dialogue around current accomplishments and future initiatives.

Among those in attendance were Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages, Assemblywoman Judy Griffin, Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick, and Nassau County Legislator Cynthia Nuñez. The officials toured the schools alongside Superintendent of Schools Dr. Unal Karakas, members of the Board of Education, and district administrators, engaging in thoughtful discussions regarding completed projects, ongoing initiatives, and future district priorities.

A highlight of the walkthrough was the newly installed sensory playground at Robert W. Carbonaro Elementary School, constructed last spring through a grant secured by Assemblywoman Solages. Another highlight was the redesigned learning environments, which intentionally foster a love of reading through access to physical books while also incorporating innovative, technology-enhanced spaces that support 21st-century learning for all students.

Valley Stream 24 Board of Education Trustee Cynthia Nuñez Announces Resignation Amid New Role

Cynthia Nuñez, a dedicated member of the Valley Stream 24 School District community, recently began her service as Nassau County District 14 Legislator following her victory in the November 2025 election. While the milestone marks an exciting new chapter in Ms. Nuñez’s career, the news was bittersweet for the Valley Stream 24 community as it came with her resignation as trustee on the Board of Education after over three years of service.

“It has been a profound honor to serve as a trustee for Valley District 24,” Ms. Nuñez said at the district’s December Board of Education meeting as she announced her resignation, which was effective December 31st, 2025. “While it is difficult to step away from the seat, I do so with immense pride in what we have accomplished together.”

Ms. Nuñez was appointed as Board of Education trustee in July 2022 and has been an active and engaged member of the Valley Stream community for nearly two decades. Prior to her service on the Board, she was a dedicated PTA member and served on the sixth-grade parent committee for over a decade, consistently advocating for students, families, and educational excellence.

“On behalf of our entire Board of Education and the Valley Stream 24 community, I extend our deepest gratitude to Trustee Cynthia Nuñez for her tireless service, dedication, and unwavering commitment to our staff, students, and families,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Unal Karakas. “Throughout her tenure, Trustee Nuñez consistently led with integrity, purpose and a clear focus on what is best for children. She has been a fierce advocate for every student and school in our district and a thoughtful, collaborative partner in advancing the collective work of the Board and district.”

“Trustee Nuñez was a strong advocate for innovation and transformation in education, firmly believing in the importance of preparing students for success in the 21st century,” Dr. Karakas continued. “Her work on the Policy Committee reflected this belief, helping to ensure that district policies aligned with forward-thinking practices that support student readiness, growth, and opportunity. She also served on multiple Board committees and played an instrumental role on the Legislative Committee, where her collaborative advocacy helped secure a half-million-dollar grant in partnership with Assemblywoman Solages.”

Valley Stream 24 students saw this grant and partnership in action last spring when the funding was used to install new water bottle filtration systems in all schools and to construct a new sensory playground at Robert W. Carbonaro Elementary School.

“This is an accomplishment that will have a lasting impact on our schools and students,” Dr. Karakas concluded. “While this moment is bittersweet, we are incredibly proud of Trustee Nuñez’s continued commitment to public service and look forward to partnering with her as she transitions into her next chapter as a legislator. Her leadership, voice, and dedication have left an enduring mark on Valley Stream 24, and we are grateful for the example she has set in service to our community.”

On announcing her resignation, Ms. Nuñez expressed gratitude for the Valley Stream 24 community and shared her hopes for the future.

“First and foremost, I want to thank our superintendent, Dr. Karakas,” she said. “Under your steadfast guidance, this administration has reached new heights of effectiveness. Your vision has provided the stability and direction our district needed, and it has been a privilege to witness the progress made under your leadership.”

She continued, “To our administrators, teachers, and staff: you are the heartbeat of our schools. Your dedication ensures that our students, the very reason we serve, have the tools to succeed. It has been a privilege to work alongside such dedicated individuals who prioritize our children's success above all else. To the parents: thank you. Thank you for partnership. Thank you for trusting us with your children's future. To my colleagues on the board of education, thank you for the shared hours of debate, collaboration, and service. Local governance is the foundation of our democracy.”

Ms. Nuñez addressed her transition to a new role, stating, “This is not a farewell, but a transition. This resignation allows me to continue the good work we have started over the past several years on a larger platform. I am excited to share that I will be cheering you on from the Nassau County Legislature. In my new role, I look forward to partnering with Valley Stream District 24 and continuing to support your growth and prosperity for years to come. Thank you to my colleagues.
